Looking to be on page 1 of Google or other top search engines? This is how you do it. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and in short; we use keywords that are relevant specifically to you in order to enhance your visibility among potential consumers who may be interested in your market of business.
Well, let’s use this analogy; your website is explored by little search bugs that report back to the main engine when they find key phrases that are being searched for by your consumer. So, when your site is lacking in SEO, those little bugs won’t find any relevant information to report, and your site will fall to the bottom of the stack (welcome back to page 10 on Google).
To the basics – How does a search engine work?
Search engines work by 3 primary functions:
Crawling
‘Crawling’ is the discovery process in which search engines send out a team of what are essentially robots or also known as crawlers or spiders, to find new and updated content. The content that they are looking for can vary — it could be a webpage, an image, a video, a PDF, etc. — but regardless of the format, content is discovered by links also known as a URL. By hopping along this path of links, the crawler is able to find new content and add it to their index – which we will explain below.
Index
Those same crawlers then give the information they gathered to the index – a huge database of all the content they’ve discovered and deem good enough to serve up to search engines like Google. Search engines will then process and store the information they found in the index.
Ranking
When someone performs a search, search engines will scour their index for the most relevant content and then puts in an order for that content in the hopes of solving the searcher’s query. This ordering of search results by relevance is known as ranking. And it’s how businesses are found on page 1 of Google search results.
SEO acts as a service to generate the visibility of your website. And to gain that visibility, you need to understand 3 components of engaging SEO.
What type of content interests your users?
How do search engines (such as google, yahoo, bing) work?
How can you not only promote your website but optimize its performance?
Simply, people search for everything. But the one thing they are all looking for is solutions. In 2009, Bill Gates sat at a private dinner where he famously stated, “the future of search is verbs.” He essentially meant that people don’t search for words, they search for the “why”.
Attract your audience
Engage your audience
Convert new customers
SEO matters because your consumers matter.
With the evolution of technology, brands are always looking for new ways to improve their visibility and customer relations in a pool filled with competitors. We have 12 reasons why SEO is important for your business, no matter what market you find yourself in.
By optimizing your content with SEO, you’ll be able to provide relevant answers for viewers that are looking in search engines. Providing relevant content and ensuring quality information is accessible at all times will build trust among users which results in higher conversions and increased ROI.
When a person searches for an answer to their problem or a product that provides a solution, you want you and your business to be at the top of search results. Providing accurate and relevant content on a consistent basis will show your audience that you are trustworthy and have their best interest at the heart of your business.
Customers know what they want, and when they want it. Websites are only as good as the content they provide and if a customer can’t find answers or products to solve their issue, there will surely be a problem with your site’s performance. But even more importantly you will be letting down your audience. The goal of SEO is to help your users find the information they are looking for in fewer clicks.
For small and medium sized businesses, localizing your target audience with the right search words will increase your likelihood of success. Local optimizations focus on just that, what’s local. Localizing a city, town, or state for target marketing purposes. It’s important to stand out in your area, how easily you can provide that service to your clients will matter when looking at the competition.
