To the basics - How does a search engine work?
Search engines work by 3 primary functions:
‘Crawling’ is the discovery process in which search engines send out a team of what are essentially robots or also known as crawlers or spiders, to find new and updated content. The content that they are looking for can vary — it could be a webpage, an image, a video, a PDF, etc. — but regardless of the format, content is discovered by links also known as a URL. By hopping along this path of links, the crawler is able to find new content and add it to their index – which we will explain below.
Those same crawlers then give the information they gathered to the index – a huge database of all the content they’ve discovered and deem good enough to serve up to search engines like Google. Search engines will then process and store the information they found in the index.
When someone performs a search, search engines will scour their index for the most relevant content and then puts in an order for that content in the hopes of solving the searcher’s query. This ordering of search results by relevance is known as ranking. And it’s how businesses are found on page 1 of Google search results.
